Day One

Willow Creek Leadership Summit
Lead Where You Are – Day One Highlights

Vision to Die For (Bill Hybels)

  • Nothing matters more than deep ownership of the vision
  • What are you willing to do for the vision? (protect, pray, protest, sacrifice, die)
  • The leader sets the pace and must be the first to deeply own the vision
  • Followers are willing to take a bullet if they know the leader is willing to take the first bullet
  • Vision formation, refinement, & declaration should be a team process

Tough Choices (Carly Fiorina)

  • I was not a gifted child but my parents were a gift to me
  • I can’t do someone else’s story (be who you are)
  • Many fears are stupid but they are real
  • Don’t let people’s smaller idea of you define who you are
  • Leadership is seeing & unlocking potential in others
  • Expect people to develop as leaders
  • There is a gift in everything (find it)

Go Put Your Strengths to Work (Marcus Buckingham)

  • Build around your strengths, manage around your weaknesses
  • People are not a company’s greatest asset, people’s strengths are a company’s greatest asset
  • MYTH – As you grow, your personality changes; TRUTH – As you grow, you become more of who you are
  • MYTH – You grow the most in your areas of greatest weakness; TRUTH – You grow the most in your areas of greatest strength
  • MYTH – A great team member puts aside his strengths and does whatever the team needs; TRUTH – A great team member volunteers his strengths to the team most of the time
  • Strengths are what you feel strong at not what you are good at
  • You are the authority on identifying your strengths
  • It doesn’t matter what I believe, it only matters what you believe
